Honoka Takamiya is an average student. Ayaka Kagari, his classmate who sits next to him in class, on the other hand is the class 'Princess.' Ayaka is tall, strikingly gorgeous and has a regalness to her that almost exudes a royal attitude. Despite their proximity in school, over the school year the two have never shared much conversation...until today. So today as class ended, Takamiya was suddenly attacked by a catered witch and her band of bunny-costumed thugs! And if that were not enough of a shock, this average joe would then be saved, like a princess by none other than Ayaka Kagari... a witch herself!\r\n\r\n(Source: Kodansha USA)

7 years agoI love the role reversal in Witch Craft Works where the male lead is completely reliant on the female lead. It\'s refreshing to see a strong female lead stay that way consistently throughout the whole series(so far). A lot of series\' have the female lead be really op at the start, but then all of a sudden they become useless for no reason and it doesn\'t really make sense. I\'m glad that Witch Craft Works took a different approach to this since it really makes the story interesting.\r\n\r\nThe premise and plot aren\'t really anything new and exciting, but when you combine that with the role\n ...\n reversal, it turns the series into something that feels new, refreshing, and exciting to read. There are some nice heartwarming moments and the characters also have interesting personalities.\r\n\r\nI will definitely continue to read this series and I hope that you also will give it a chance.\r\n\r\nTLDR; Refreshing read with role reversal.

9 years agoWitch Craft Works: An underappreciated role reversal manga\r\n\r\nThis is not something you stay for the plot ....mainly. What most people stay for are the characters and their personalities. The main characters being two flat mc\'s or are they? At first glance, we see Takamiya as a coward and Kagari as an ice queen. Bam! Nothing else but that\'s not entirely true as we progress we start seeing them develop. We witness Takamiya\'s push aside his fears to save those he cares for, his love for humanity and willing to sacrifice himself if it means saving the many even if it hurts those close to him\n ...\n it\'s something most people would admire. He is introduced to this crazy world that\'s been secretly alongside him. He reacts as a normal human would; with uncertainty and caution, this is a breath of fresh air from the self insert Gary-stu OP isekai low tier written characters that are flooding the current manga/novel landscape that just accept what has happened without question. Kagari and her adoration for takamiya seem pretty standard until you find out why. You eventually find that her love for takamiya isn\'t something that\'s shallow. When we progress further into the chapters we uncover why; we also see that he\'s as much of her hero as she is his.\r\n\r\nAs for the supporting characters the thing I appreciate a ton is that when you see them you don\'t roll your eyes and wish they\'d give the mc\'s more screen time. You know they\'re there to make things lighter causing them for the reader to almost a big a fan of theirs as the are of the mc\'s.\r\n\r\nThe art used in the manga is astounding, backgrounds, easter eggs! Playing \'\'Where\'s Waldo?\'\' with every chapter to count the amount of side characters. Ryu\'s improvement of her skills seeing the designs of her characters be looking way different from when they first appeared the way they look makes you say \'\'Yep this is something from Ryu\'\'. She improved not just artistically but production wise. If you pay attention you can see her reuse character poses in different chapters causing her to be more consistent with her releases which always appreciated.\r\n\r\nThis is a hidden diamond in the ruff and I would appreciate it if you gave it a try.

13 years agoBeing a mi-monthly series and sitting at six currently out it may seem a bit early to give this a score of any sort. Despite the simple premise of a strong girl needing to protect the lead it is done in a way I find to be absolutely charming. \r\n\r\nThe interactions between the two main characters, Kagari and Takimya makes for plenty of funny but also sweet moments. One of the elements I like best is how the powerful female lead doesn\'t smack around the male lead, all too common in other series for my tastes. Even better, she doesn\'t try to him him away.\n ...\n At the same time the lead isn\'t just going to sit back and let her face all the evil that may come.\r\n\r\nWhile antagonists come and go they are fun to watch. Some questions floating around as to why this is all happening so there is more than an endless stream of fights. As for one of the strongest points, I\'d consider the art to be gorgeous. Many of the spreads drool worthy.
